Writeroom Acceptable Use Policy
Version 1.2, effective October 27, 2026.
This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") is part of the Writeroom Terms of Use and of every School Services Agreement. It applies to everyone who uses the Writeroom app, website or Chrome extension (the "Service"), whether as a School, administrator, teacher, student or visitor. Capitalized terms have the meanings in the Terms of Use and the School Services Agreement.
Writeroom is a writing space for schoolwork. These rules exist to keep it safe, honest and working for everyone. Schools are responsible for making sure their Authorized Users follow them, and may add their own rules.
1. Use Writeroom for schoolwork, honestly
1.1 Use the Service only for the educational purposes your School allows.
1.2 Do not misrepresent who you are. Do not sign in as someone else, share your account, or let anyone else use it.
1.3 Do not use the Service to do schoolwork for another student in a way your School forbids, or to help anyone pass off work as their own.
2. Do not break, probe or bypass the Service
2.1 Do not test, scan or probe the security of the Service, attempt to gain access to accounts, data or systems you are not authorized to use, or interfere with any user, host or network. Writeroom welcomes responsible security reports: tell us through the contact form at writeroom.org/contact (topic: Security) before testing anything, and do not access, change or keep any data that is not yours.
2.2 Do not interfere with the recording of a writing history in an assignment document, or help anyone do so, including by altering client code, replaying or forging events, manipulating the system clock to mislead the record, or disconnecting the recorder while continuing to write. (Losing your connection or your device going to sleep is not a breach; recording resumes and Writeroom tells the teacher about gaps so they can ask.)
2.3 Do not circumvent Seat limits, access controls, assignment rules (such as paste limits, writing windows or supervision requirements), the extension's site rules, or any other technical restriction.
2.4 Do not scrape, crawl, bulk-download or harvest data from the Service except through features Writeroom provides for export, and do not use automated tools to access the Service other than browsers and Writeroom's own extension.
2.5 Do not copy, modify, reverse engineer, decompile or create derivative works of the Service, or use it to build a competing product, except where the law allows despite this restriction.
2.6 Do not introduce malware, or upload files that are not what they claim to be.
2.7 Do not try to instruct, manipulate or inject prompts into the AI features (for example by hiding text in a document meant to influence an AI marker). Writeroom's guard is designed to detect such attempts and show them to the teacher as a flag.
3. Content you may not put in Writeroom
3.1 Do not upload, paste, write or share content that is unlawful, that infringes anyone's copyright, trademark or other rights, that is defamatory, or that you do not have the right to use.
3.2 Do not upload or share sexually explicit material, material that sexualizes minors, graphic violence, or content that promotes self-harm, hatred or violence against any person or group, except where a teacher has set and supervised an assignment that legitimately requires discussion of difficult subject matter under the School's policies.
3.3 Do not harass, bully, threaten, intimidate or demean anyone, including through comments, document titles, shared documents or images.
3.4 Do not enter other people's secrets or private information into the Service: passwords, one-time codes, banking or payment details, health information, or private messages about other people, unless the assignment legitimately requires it and your School has approved. The outside-clipboard check (when a School turns it on) is designed to drop text that looks like a password or code, but you should not rely on it.
3.5 Teachers and administrators: do not put a student's personal information into a document, comment, assignment or AI request beyond what the assignment needs, and do not export Student Data from the Service except for a legitimate School purpose and in keeping with your School's privacy policies.
4. Integrity Signals and supervision tools
4.1 Teachers and administrators must read "How to read Writeroom's signals" before relying on any Integrity Signal, must talk with the student before reaching a conclusion, and must follow their School's academic-integrity process, including its review or appeal step. An integrity decision recorded in Writeroom must carry the teacher's own note.
4.2 Do not use Integrity Signals, replays, screen clips, extension reports or AI outputs to target, single out, humiliate or discriminate against a student, to accuse a student publicly, to share a student's writing history or signals with people who have no educational need to see them, or as the sole basis for any accusation, grade penalty or discipline.
4.3 Do not use screen supervision, live screen viewing or the extension for any purpose other than supervising the assignment they are turned on for, and do not use them to observe students outside the assignment or outside the Service.
4.4 Do not record, screenshot, download or redistribute another person's writing history, replay, screen clips or signals except through the Service's own features and for a legitimate School purpose.
4.5 Do not alter a student's document in a way that misrepresents what the student wrote. Teacher edits are recorded as the teacher's.
5. Website and public pages
5.1 Do not submit false or misleading information through the contact form, send spam, or impersonate a school or person.
5.2 Do not frame, mirror or republish Writeroom's website or Documentation without permission, other than quoting short extracts with attribution.
6. Enforcement
6.1 Schools enforce this AUP for their own Authorized Users first. Writeroom will refer concerns about an Authorized User to the School's administrators wherever possible, and will act through the School for students.
6.2 Writeroom may investigate suspected breaches, and may suspend or remove access for an account, or for a School, where a breach is serious or repeated, threatens the security of the Service or of others, or is unlawful, in accordance with the Terms of Use and the School Services Agreement. Writeroom will limit any suspension to what is necessary and will give notice in advance where that is practicable and safe.
6.3 Writeroom may remove or disable access to content that violates this AUP, and will tell the School administrator when it does, except where the law prohibits notice.
6.4 Writeroom may report unlawful activity to the authorities where the law requires or permits, and will cooperate with lawful requests as described in the Privacy Policy and the Data Protection Addendum.
6.5 Nothing in this AUP requires Writeroom to monitor content or conduct, and Writeroom does not review students' writing for compliance. Writeroom acts on reports and on what it discovers while operating the Service.
7. Reporting
Report misuse, security concerns or harmful content through the contact form at writeroom.org/contact (choose the topic Security or Support), or, if you are a student, to your teacher or School administrator. Writeroom will acknowledge reports within [one business day].
8. Changes
Writeroom may update this AUP on at least 30 days' notice to Schools, as the School Services Agreement describes. The current version is always at [writeroom.org/legal/acceptable-use].
Writeroom is operated by the person who runs writeroom.org and app.writeroom.org and who signs each School's Order Form. The operator's legal name and mailing address are given in each School's Order Form and are provided on request through the contact form at writeroom.org/contact.
