About Writeroom

Writing is thinking. We help teachers see it.

Writeroom is a writing space for classrooms. Students write their assignments in Writeroom, and teachers see how each piece of writing came together: when it was written, what was typed and what was pasted, and how the draft changed over time. A teacher can replay a whole essay from the first word to the last.

The Writeroom student editor: a personal narrative being written, with a Writing history on label next to the title.

Why we built it

AI tools can now produce a polished essay in seconds. Teachers are left guessing which work is a student's own, and students who do their own writing deserve to have that effort recognised.

Most tools try to answer that question by looking only at the finished text. The finished text is the least informative part. The process is where the learning happens, so that is what Writeroom shows: the drafting, the revising, the false starts, the moments a student got stuck and kept going.

What we believe

  • Teachers decide. Writeroom shows what happened and points out moments worth a look. It never accuses a student, never gives a grade on its own, and never makes a decision a teacher should make. A flag is a reason to look closer and to talk with the student, not a verdict.
  • Students are told. Every student sees a clear notice of what Writeroom records before they write. Nothing about what is recorded is hidden from them.
  • Student work belongs to students and their school. We never sell data, never show ads, and never use student writing to train AI models.
  • Privacy is built in. Student work and the record of how it was written are stored in Canada. Writeroom records only in school assignments, never in students' own documents. Schools choose how long data is kept, and can export or delete it at any time. Our privacy policy lists every service that handles data and where.
  • It should fit how teachers already work. Writeroom works alongside Google Classroom. Teachers post an assignment link the way they post anything else.

Who it is for

Writeroom is for schools and school boards, from elementary to high school. Schools get Writeroom through an agreement with us, and their administrators invite their teachers and students.
