Accessibility statement
Draft, for review. Last updated October 27, 2026.
Writeroom is used by students and teachers with a wide range of needs, and we want everyone to be able to use it. This page describes where the website and the app stand today, and the limits we know about.
This website
We aim for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. In particular:
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, shows where the keyboard focus is, and starts with a link to skip to the main content.
- Pages use headings, landmarks and labelled forms, so screen readers can move around them.
- Text and controls meet the AA contrast ratios, and the layout works from small phones to large screens and when zoomed to 200%.
- Nothing moves on its own. If you ask your device to reduce motion, the site respects it.
- The launch video has music and on-screen text but no speech. It never plays by itself, and the home page writes out every line it shows.
- Screenshots have text alternatives that describe what they show.
The Writeroom app
- In the student editor and the teacher pages, icon buttons have names for screen readers, focus is visible, and secondary text meets the AA contrast ratio. Some views may still be hard to use with assistive technology; please tell us when you find one.
- Teachers get the story of each document in plain sentences on the Summary, so the facts behind visual views such as the replay and charts are also available as text.
- Some features need a desktop version of Google Chrome and are not available on tablets or other browsers: screen supervision and the Writeroom Chrome extension.
- Dictation and input methods for other languages are recorded as such and are never flagged as pasting.
Schools decide how Writeroom is used with students who need accommodations, and a teacher can exempt a student from screen supervision and extension requirements for an assignment.
What we have not done
Writeroom has not had an independent accessibility audit, and we do not claim formal conformance with any standard. We test with keyboards, screen readers and automated checks as we build.
Tell us about a problem
If something on this website or in Writeroom is hard to use, please tell us through the contact form (topic: Support). Say which page and what happened, and we will work on a fix.
